Two sisters whose different creative paths eventually crossed.

Emu Tracks began with two sisters who had spent years following very different creative paths.

Kat found hers in education. Sarah found hers behind a camera. Somewhere along the way, those paths started heading in the same direction.

Kat’s path

Kat has always been the knowledge seeker. She was the kid with her nose in a book, and not much has changed. That curiosity eventually led her into teaching, where a love of learning became a love of helping others learn too.

Her career has taken her across Australia, from the Kimberley in Western Australia to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, working as a teacher, education leader and learning designer in very different communities and contexts. Along the way, she learned that great learning is never one-size-fits-all. Who you're designing for, where they are, what they already know and what might make learning harder to access all matter.

That experience shaped the way Kat approaches learning design today. She loves untangling complicated ideas, asking far too many questions and finding the clearest path through the content. Whether she's mapping a learning journey, designing an eLearning experience or staring at an overflowing folder of information wondering where to begin, she's always thinking about the person on the other side of it.

Because for Kat, good learning isn't about how much information you can fit in. It's about creating something people can access, understand and value.

Sarah’s path

If Kat was the one reading the book, Sarah was the one judging its design. Where other people might see a page, a photograph or a logo, she's noticing the typography, spacing, colour, composition and all the tiny choices working quietly in the background.

It was probably inevitable that she would find her way into photography and graphic design. Her career has given her room to explore typography, branding and different creative media, while photography has taken her even further. Today, she's one of Australia's leading group photographers, bringing together people, composition and countless moving parts to create an image where everything feels effortless, even when it definitely wasn't.

Behind that creative eye is a serious curiosity for how things work. Sarah loves learning new systems and finding the edges of what design software can do. She's rarely satisfied with knowing the standard way to use a tool when there might be a smarter or more creative way hiding somewhere in the settings.

At Emu Tracks, that means Sarah brings both imagination and precision. She thinks about how learning looks, how it feels to move through and how visual choices can make an idea clearer rather than simply prettier.

For Sarah, the best design is the kind where every detail feels intentional, even if you never notice why

Turns out, learning and design make a pretty good pair.

Over the years, there were plenty of conversations about what each of us was working on. Kat would be thinking about how to make learning more engaging and Sarah would be thinking about the perfect colour palette.

Somewhere along the way, as we both became mums and started reflecting on where our different paths had taken us, we realised those two things worked pretty well together.

So we created Emu Tracks, a learning design studio that brings together the best of both of us: education and pedagogy, digital design and creativity, an eye for the smallest details, and a genuine love of what we do.
