The need
My Independent School needed to move subject units, resources and assessment into a digital learning environment.
Much of the existing curriculum was paper-based or stored across different locations, making resources harder to find, manage and update efficiently. The goal was not simply to put existing content online, but to create a digital learning environment that was clear, consistent and easy for both teachers and students to navigate.
The LMS needed to support in-class teaching, bring curriculum and assessment together in one place, and reduce unnecessary complexity for teachers managing their courses.
The solution
I worked closely with staff and students to understand how they needed the LMS to work in practice, then designed and implemented a consistent Canvas environment around those needs.
Rather than treating Canvas as a storage space for digital files, the focus was on creating a clear learning experience. Courses, modules, assessments and resources were organised using consistent structures and templates so students could more easily understand where to go and what to do next.
The implementation was staged over approximately one year, giving teachers time to become familiar with the platform, provide feedback and build confidence before the system was fully implemented.
The process
The implementation combined learning design, systems thinking and collaboration with the people who would actually use Canvas every day.
→ Collaborated with staff and students to understand their needs, concerns and existing ways of working.
→ Designed the overall Canvas LMS structure, including course organisation, modules and navigation.
→ Created consistent templates to make courses easier for students to recognise and navigate.
→ Digitised curriculum content and resources to support classroom teaching.
→ Set up assessments, marking guides and relevant course settings within Canvas.
→ Worked alongside teaching and leadership staff to review drafts and gather feedback.
→ Staged the implementation over approximately one year rather than introducing the entire system at once.
→ Delivered professional development and practical support to help staff build the skills and confidence needed to use the LMS successfully.
A closer look
The finished Canvas environment brought courses, learning resources and assessment into a more consistent digital experience, while still allowing individual subjects and teachers to retain their own content and identity.

The outcome
The Canvas implementation created a more consistent digital learning environment for My Independent School, bringing curriculum, resources and assessment together in one place.
The project went beyond the technical setup of an LMS. It included learning design, content organisation, template development, staff professional development and an implementation approach designed to make the transition manageable for teachers and students.
CONSISTENCY
A shared structure across courses and subjects.
NAVIGATION
Clearer pathways to learning, resources and assessment.
EFFICIENCY
Content organised so it could be easier to find, manage and update.
CAPABILITY
Professional development and support to help staff use Canvas confidently.
Keep exploring.
