The need
My Independent School needed a clear and engaging staff induction that would help new staff feel confident, supported and informed from the beginning of their role.
Essential information and processes needed to be brought together in one central place, while also ensuring compulsory requirements could be completed and recorded.
The induction needed to balance practical information with a welcoming introduction to the school, giving staff something useful when they first started and a resource they could return to later when they needed it.
KEY NEEDS
→ Provide one central place for essential staff information and processes.
→ Help staff feel confident in their role from day one.
→ Maintain a clear record of completion for compulsory requirements.
→ Give staff an ongoing resource they could revisit when needed.
→ Make the induction easy to navigate and engaging through videos, short quizzes and clear content.
The solution
I designed and developed a structured staff induction within Canvas LMS, bringing essential information together into one clear digital learning experience.
The induction combined clear modules, practical information and simple guidance to help staff understand what they needed to know as they joined the school.
Videos and simple quizzes were incorporated throughout the induction, along with check-off points for key requirements. The experience was designed to be easy to navigate, visually consistent and useful beyond the initial onboarding period.
The design also needed to balance two purposes: creating a welcoming and engaging introduction for new staff, while ensuring compulsory components could be completed and accounted for.
The process
The induction was developed collaboratively, combining staff knowledge with learning design to identify what new employees genuinely needed during their first days and weeks.
→ Collaborated with staff to understand the school culture, language and onboarding experience.
→ Worked with staff to identify what they wished they had known when they first started.
→ Identified which content was compulsory and which information was useful supporting knowledge.
→ Organised information into a clear module structure rather than presenting new staff with one large collection of information.
→ Designed the visual structure and navigation to create a consistent and approachable learning experience.
→ Incorporated videos, short quizzes and completion points where appropriate.
→ Prioritised clarity, relevance and ease of use throughout the design.
A closer look
The finished induction combines essential information, practical guidance, videos and short learning activities within one consistent Canvas experience.

The outcome
The finished staff induction brought essential onboarding information and compulsory requirements together within one structured digital learning experience.
Rather than creating a resource that was only useful on a staff member’s first day, the induction was designed to remain available as an ongoing point of reference, giving staff a clear place to return to when they needed information later.
The project demonstrates how an LMS can support both the practical requirements of onboarding and the experience of welcoming people into an organisation.
CLARITY
Essential onboarding information organised in one place.
CONFIDENCE
Practical guidance to help staff understand their role and environment.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Clear completion points for compulsory requirements.
ONGOING SUPPORT
A resource staff could return to after induction.
Keep exploring.
